Welcome International Students

Studying online for an EMBA or Ph.D. program as an international student comes with fewer government-related restrictions compared to studying on-campus. However, there are still important rules, regulations, and institutional policies to be aware of.

Visa Requirements

100% Online Programs

  • Not required if you are studying 100% online from your home country
  • F-1 student visas are for on-campus study and do not apply to remote programs

Hybrid Programs

If the program is hybrid (includes mandatory campus visits), you may need a short-term visa (like a tourist or business visa) for those sessions.

  • Online payment systems (Flywire, Western Union, PayMyTuition)

Academic Integrity and Privacy Laws

  • Universities apply the same academic honesty policies to online students (e.g., plagiarism, cheating)
  • Your data is protected by U.S. laws (FERPA) or GDPR if the school is based in Europe
  • You may be monitored during online exams using remote proctoring tools (like Respondus or ProctorU)

Graduation and Credential Use

  • Degrees earned online are equivalent to on-campus degrees in most cases
  • Your diploma usually won’t say “online” unless it’s a specific online-only institution
  • Confirm your degree will be recognized in your home country, especially for Ph.D. or government jobs

Program-Specific Rules

EMBA-Specific Rules

  • You may need employer approval or support for flexible work schedules
  • Capstone projects or real-world case studies are often part of the curriculum

Ph.D.-Specific Rules

  • You may need a local supervisor/mentor if your program requires applied research in your country
  • Some universities require in-person defense (either optional or mandatory via short visits or video conference)
